A night of music and poetry featuring Haleh Liza Gafori, Shane Shanahan, and  Steve Gorn, celebrating the launch of GOLD Poems by Rumi, released by New York Review Books/Penguin Random House

Vocalist, poet, and translator, Haleh Liza Gafori will share new translations of poems by the Persian mystic and sage Rumi. Accompanied by master musicians, bansuri flautist Steve Gorn and percussionist Shane Shanahan, shell sing dashes of the Persian text, offering glimpses into the astonishing rhythm, rhyme, and wordplay that propels Rumis original poems.

This dynamic and uplifting combination of poems, chants, stories, and music will open us further to the mystical insights that grace Rumis poetry.

Steve Gorn, whose flute is said to re-align the cells, combines the essence of the Indian classical music tradition with a contemporary world music sensibility. He is featured on the Grammy winning recording, Miho  Journey to the Mountain, with the Paul Winter Consort, as well as the Academy Award winning Documentary film, Born into Brothels, as well as recordings with Paul Simon, Jack DeJonette, Glen Velez and numerous Indian musicians.

Shane Shanahan, percussionist and composer is a founding member of Yo-Yo Mas Grammy Award-Winning  Silkroad Ensemble, and served as Co-Artistic Director of the group from 2017-2020. His dynamic performances have brought people to their feet in the greatest concert halls of the world, including Carnegie Hall, after which the New York Times proclaimed, By the time he finished in a virtuosic jesters dance, limbs flying as he whirled back and forth between doumbek, cymbals and body parts, the audience roared with delight. Shane has performed and/or recorded with Bobby McFerrin, Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Philip Glass, Alison Krauss, Deep Purple, Jordi Savall, Chaka Khan, and Glen Velez, among others.
