A night of music and poetry featuring Haleh Liza Gafori, Shane Shanahan, and Steve Gorn, celebrating the launch of GOLD Poems by Rumi, released by New York Review Books/Penguin Random House
Vocalist, poet, and translator, Haleh Liza Gafori will share new translations of poems by the Persian mystic and sage Rumi. Accompanied by master musicians, bansuri flautist Steve Gorn and percussionist Shane Shanahan, shell sing dashes of the Persian text, offering glimpses into the astonishing rhythm, rhyme, and wordplay that propels Rumis original poems.
This dynamic and uplifting combination of poems, chants, stories, and music will open us further to the mystical insights that grace Rumis poetry.
ABOUT: Haleh Liza Gafori is a poet, translator, composer, and vocalist born in NYC of Persian descent. She has been singing and translating the words of Persian poets for well over a decade. GOLD, Poems by Rumi is her first book of translations, to be released on New York Review Books Classics. Her own writings have been published by Columbia University Press, Literary Hub, and Rattapallax. She has toured as a vocalist with various projects playing such venues as Lincoln Center and the Bonnaroo Festival and has taught workshops on Rumi's poetry at universities and institutions across the country. Steve Gorn, whose flute is said to re-align the cells, combines the essence of the Indian classical music tradition with a contemporary world music sensibility. He is featured on the Grammy winning recording, Miho Journey to the Mountain, with the Paul Winter Consort, as well as the Academy Award winning Documentary film, Born into Brothels, as well as recordings with Paul Simon, Jack DeJonette, Glen Velez and numerous Indian musicians.
Shane Shanahan, percussionist and composer is a founding member of Yo-Yo Mas Grammy Award-Winning Silkroad Ensemble, and served as Co-Artistic Director of the group from 2017-2020. His dynamic performances have brought people to their feet in the greatest concert halls of the world, including Carnegie Hall, after which the New York Times proclaimed, By the time he finished in a virtuosic jesters dance, limbs flying as he whirled back and forth between doumbek, cymbals and body parts, the audience roared with delight. Shane has performed and/or recorded with Bobby McFerrin, Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Philip Glass, Alison Krauss, Deep Purple, Jordi Savall, Chaka Khan, and Glen Velez, among others.
