Portola High School Tour
Presented By: HMC Architects
Surrounded by regional history and inspired by local geography, Portola High School in Irvine, California, is a twenty-first-century school where learning happens everywhere. With flexible open spaces, collaboration zones, and science and innovation labs, it looks and feels more like a college campus than a high school.
Portola High School is an AIAOC 2021 Design Awards winner.
Learning Objectives:
-Attendees will learn how this unique design concept helped reduce construction costs by 30%.
-Attendees will learn how vegetated roofs helped reduce overall energy usage
-Attendees will learn how to incorporate solar farms into their projects with no impact to the site.
-Attendees will experience how accessibility is accomplished through interior and exterior learning environments.

James Krueger, AIA, NCARB
As Director of Design, James oversees design and leads strategies to improve the impact of HMCs work. Formerly serving as design principal, where he led projects for HMCs PreK-12 and civic practices, Kruegers creative approach emphasizes the firms purpose of design for good to support clients with high-performance solutions that aim to have a positive impact.
Angel Hosband, Regional Practice Leader, PreK-12
As HMC's regional practice leader for Southern California, Angel works closely with regional PICs in Ontario, Los Angeles, and San Diego to provide strategic direction and lead business development strategies. She is also part of HMC's PreK-12 executive leadership team. With nearly three decades of architectural experience in the planning, design, and construction of education projects, Angel oversees school projects with a unique ability to guide teams in translating client priorities, expectations, and requirements into functional, efficient, and buildable design solutions.
