Duo x 2 - Teja Gerken & Doug Young and Noctambule at Old St. Hilary's Landmark
We are featuring an exciting double-bill of two acclaimed acoustic duos, Teja Gerken & Doug Young, and Noctambule. Each duo offers their own take on the unique ways that connects two musicians in collaboration. The program will take a musical journey around the globe, feature virtuoso performances on a variety of fretted instruments, and will culminate in the two duos becoming a quartet.
TEJA GERKEN & DOUG YOUNG DUO - Inspired by the examples set by instrumental guitar duos ranging from folk-baroque legends John Renbourn and Bert Jansch to the sophistication of the Duo Assad, Teja and Doug create arrangements that are larger than the sum of their parts. The duo also takes advantage of the timbres available through an array of tunings and by pairing a wide variety of guitars. Having performed together for more than a decade, they recently released their album Duets. Drawing from their individual catalogs of original compositions, Celtic tunes, arrangements of jazz standards, and the occasional classical piece, Teja and Doug present a varied repertoire. www.tejaanddougguitar.com
Marla Fibish and Bruce Victor are NOCTAMBULE (French for night-owl). They perform traditional Irish tunes and songs, their own tunes written in traditional forms, and compelling musical settings of a broad array of poetry. This unique collaboration brings out qualities in both of these seasoned musicians rendered with lush beauty, sensitivity and humor on an unusual array of strings: various guitars in varied tunings, mandola, mandolin, bouzouki, cittern, tenor guitar---and their blended voices. Marla is one of the prominent voices of the mandolin in Irish music. Bruce is an eclectic and accomplished guitarist and composer who brings a spirit of experimentation to the tonalities and textures of the guitar. They have recently released their fourth album, Every Migrant is My Fellow. www.noctambulemusic.com
