John Starrs & Cecilie O'Reilly - RHINOFEST 2014
John Starrs has been told that he has been in and around the Rhino since the beginning. Like the founders (one of whom imparted to him this bit of lore), he does not remember when this beginning began. So let's just say, he's composed and read his stories; written and appeared in his own play, Riverview; directed the Scottish Play with Curious actors in most of the roles, thereby adding the name of Will Shakespeare to the long list of distinguished Curious Theatre Branch authors; and in general, been around.
Rhino past presenter Cecilie O'Reilly will perform Current, a program of her latest work of poetry and prose. Cecilie combines simple staging with her use of vocal theatrics to create an assortment of characters and situations that explore themes of personal discovery. The Irish poet W.B. Yeats once said he wrote his poetry to be performed. Cecilie's work explores various forms of the written word as opportunities for oral expression. The material includes a humorous account of her everyday experiences, an urban depiction of the seasons and the environment, a nostalgic look at precious objects of our possession and a dose of the tricks of aging. It was written as part of her Columbia College sabbatical in conjunction with her research on contemporary American women writers and the use of voice in performance of women's writing for the stage. The program is approximately 45 minutes.
