Die Gruppe in "Last Night's Appetizers"
Theatre Unleashed orders you to welcome Die Gruppe!!!
Company kicks off 2009 by giving a C-Section birth to its very own sketch comedy group with a single purpose: Were Going to Hell For You!
LOS ANGELES Officially starting its 2009 season, Theatre Unleashed is proud... kind of... can we be proud and ashamed at the same time? Anyway... uhh... Theatre Unleashed is excited to introduce Die Gruppe, a sketch comedy group comprised of TU members in its first ever show, Last Nights Appetizers on Monday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at El Cid in Hollywood.
The sketch troupe... Die Gruppe is German, by the way, though were not sure what it means because were too lazy to look it up. We do know that in English it means the most handsome women and prettiest men in California. Weird. Were not really sure why we chose that name, but it sounds cool, especially if you say it with the German accent. Try it. Okay, now try it with a Spanish accent
Sorry. Die Gruppe is yet another new venture for the fledgling theatre company, which enjoyed an incredibly successful first year with shows like The Tempest and Pin-Up Girls as well as one-act series like What We Should Have Said and Through a Caffeine Haze. Just last month, Theatre Unleashed held a season-ending holiday variety show celebration at M Bar. Between bitter, bitching holiday celebrities, inappropriate carols and Santa's helpers taking off their clothes, the company announced its upcoming season, starting with the Feb. 2 show.
A sketch comedy show briskly and daringly sets the wide-ranging tone from our previous season to our forthcoming season without needing an elaborate production, said our extremely pretentious Artistic Director Phillip Kelly. Plus, it allows us to entertain people while they imbibe alcohol like the slobbering drunks they are.
Thats more like it. Last Nights Appetizers features skits from both seasoned comedy writers kidnapped... er... borrowed from other sketch troupes throughout the city and first time writers whose mothers have convinced them that they have talent. The show itself will feature a cast of purposefully obnoxious actors working both new material and original scenes left on the cutting room floor, as it were, from last seasons Main Stage season (come on, admit it, you're curious to see what happened after everybody left the island in The Tempest). The show will also include the use of video and live music to make it more than a show... rather, a guffawing extravaganza.
Everyone in the world has a handful of things that will make them laugh 100 percent of the time and mine happen to be children falling down, people on roller skates falling down (especially children) and NASA-trained monkeys solving math, said Jacob Smith, the director of the show and the company's peyote dealer. This show will have some of that and so much more.
Die Gruppe has every intention of living up to its motto: Were Going to Hell For You! Trust me, you'll see how... come enjoy the ride down.
