January Fool Factory: Commedia dell'Arte and Comic Violence
A Two-Day Intensive in COMMEDIA TECHNIQUE, SLAPSTICK, and ENSEMBLE ACROBALANCE, led by Founding Artistic Director and SAFD Certified Teacher Matthew R. Wilson. This January 25-26, 2014, at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC.
Open to beginning and advanced students (returning students will work on canovacci while beginners study technique), this two-day intensive will focus on all the characters of Commedia dell'Arte as well as techniques, theories, and plans for comedic violence. (NOTE: there are no prerequisites, but strong backs and knees are recommended for this physical activity.)
Plan of study: Saturday AM: The Commedia Characters (beginners will learn technique, returning students will create short scenari.)
Saturday PM: Comic Violence: Slapstick techniques, Why is Pain Funny?, and How "Real" is Farce? Ensemble Acrobalance: Lifts, Carries, Flips, and Comic Acrobatics
Sunday AM: Brutal Balancé: The elegant art of fighting off the ground.
Sunday PM: Scene Development: Participants will create ensemble-devised scenes, incorporating the techniques and theories previously studied. 4:30pm Final Showing: Short, devised scenes, open to the public (free of charge)
Note: there will be a one-hour lunch break each day. There are options for purchasing food at area restaurants, or participants will have use of a refrigerator and microwave on site.

$275 for the full course $150 for first day only (Jan 25)
