This 3-week course is for anyone who loves to sing and play the ukulele. The roots of many genres draw deeply from the blues, including country, rock, folk, and jazz. Your overall playing and singing abilities will improve as we build skills from the ground up. Led by vocal coach Jody Albright, singer/songwriter Rebecca Padula, and Ukulele Clare, we'll laugh and sing and play our way through the blues.
Learn the basics of the 12-bar blues form, which thousands of songs are based on - we'll even use it to write our own blues songs!
Learn vocal warmups and techniques that will help you build confidence in your voice
Learn how to add emotion to your voice ... and how to really belt it out
Learn blues riffs and embellishments on your ukulele
Learn improv basics with your voice and your uke
... and more!
You will get the most out of this class if you can maintain a steady strum and can change with relative ease among most of these chords: A, B7, Am, A7, C, C7 D, Dm, D7, E7, Em, F, F7, G, G7, Gm. If you can't get to any particular chord, you're enthusiastically invited to fake it til you make it! I'm lookin' at you, bar chords! Here's a blog post on how to get it down. NOTE: We don't cover baritone chords in this class. Geared for adults age 18+.
THIS CLASS IS ONLINE, VIA ZOOM. AFER REGISTERING, YOU'LL RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION EMAIL CONTAINING THE ZOOM LINK. YOU WILL NEED THIS TO ATTEND - BE SURE TO STASH IT WHERE YOU CAN FIND IT!
Led by: Jody Albright, a vocalist who enjoys singing many styles of music and especially loves to improvise. She is also a voice instructor and circle-singing leader. She has been performing and teaching since the 1980s. Jody has always been especially interested in helping people 'find their voice' and discover the joy of singing. She holds a Masters degree in music from the New England Conservatory in Boston.
Rebecca Padula: A dark folk-rock espresso with a shot of bluegrass and a hint of jazz. Her smoldering alto simmers over guitar, ukulele, tenor banjo or mandolin to create an intimate and varied show that often includes her own originals and works by other Vermont songwriters. She has performed throughout New England at coffeehouses, bars, events, festivals, town halls, opera houses, weddings, and has opened for acts from LeAnn Rimes to Patty Larkin. She performs solo as a singer-songwriter and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and with a host of other projects. Find out more at rebeccapadula.com
Ukulele Clare, who has taught hundreds of students to play the ukulele. She has a knack for untangling those knotty concepts and welcoming all levels - especially those with no musical experience - into the fantabulous world of music and joy of playing the ukulele. Find out more at ukuleleclare.com
