Writers Bloc Presents James Carville and Mary Matalin with Patt Morrison
Strange bedfellows to be sure. It's not unusual to have a mixed marriageby mixed we mean a Democrat marrying a Republican. But this Democrat is not just any Democrat, and that Republican is not just any Republican. James Carville is now a household name in Democratic campaign circlesafter managing Bill Clinton's triumphal march to the White House in 1992. Mary Matalin was George H.W. Bush's key strategist, and a key part of George W. Bush's administration. It's a good thing that marriage is a lot more than politics.
James Carville and Mary Matalin come to Writers Bloc to discuss their political orientation, their marriage, how they reconcile their ideological differences, and how they manage to still speak to each other. Both provocative and extremely influential in their own spheres, Carville and Matalin reveal that being so utterly mismatched isn't such a bad thing after all. Who would think that Barbara Bush could intimidate a powerhouse like James Carville? And would think that Mary Matalin, in her perch in the West Wing, would have time to argue about furniture choices and money. They are brilliant and witty, and no matter what your orientation, they prove that Democrats and Republicans really do all fight about the same things. No spoilers here, but Mary's riff about President Clinton visiting their home in New Orleans is pretty wonderful.
Patt Morrison will moderate and mediate the conversation with the Democrat and the Republican. Patt is a weekly contributor to the Los Angeles Times with her Saturday interview, and she is one of the best aspects of KPCC when she sits in on AirTalk.
