LABAlive Presents MOTHER: Creator/ Destroyer Two new works from 2013-2014 LABA Fellows exploring the creative and destructive forces that lie within MOTHER. THEATER "La Bestia: Sweet Mother" by Tom Block
One-act drama featuring original art, cello and dance.
This new work explores the knife's edge between creation and destruction. Inspired by the earliest texts of Genesis, in addition to precursor creation myths from the Babylonians, Egyptians, Zoroastrians, Hindus and Greeks, Block weaves together a tale of three mothers who are also, due to their personal circumstances, forced to become destroyers, as well. MUSIC "Shomeret Layla" (The Nightwatcher), by Nadav Lev
A new composition featuring the female voice, electric guitar and live electronics.
Lev composed a nocturnal musical journey that explores experiences and memories from his kibbutz childhood. Each week a different woman in the kibbutz would take on the job of shomeret layla, or the woman in charge of overseeing the communal nursery a night. This piece chronicles the encounter between the shomeret and awoken child who is not hers.
