Internationally renowned violinist Ariadne Daskalakis returns to her home town this March in a concert presented by the Suzuki School of Newton. The concert will take place on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at 4 p.m. Wilson Chapel is located at 210 Herrick Road in Newton Centre on the Andover Newton Theological School campus. The venue is reachable by the green line Newton Centre T stop.
Ms. Daskalakis, who lives in Germany from where she pursues a very busy career both as a soloist and Professor of violin at the Hochschule für Musik Köln said: "I started violin when I was almost six years old. There was no Suzuki School in Newton at the time but I started lessons with Emily Sandler, whom I loved. I loved my lessons but I disliked practising and kept that to a minimum." she added. At the age of nine she started studying with Eric Rosenblith at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. "Many people at NEC Prep were very supportive of my development." Rosenblith consistently encouraged her to pursue a career as a professional musician. At age 16, Ms. Daskalakis performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Boston Pops Orchestra with Harry Ellis Dickson, conducting.
Daskalakis will be joined by the American born international pianist Anthony Spiri. The two will perform a classical program with pieces by Mozart, Faure, Handel, and Schreker.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the school's need-based scholarship fund. This enables financial assistance to ten per cent of the Suzuki School of Newton student body who would otherwise not be able to afford the benefits of this high quality music education program. Since the school's learning approach is based upon "nurture" rather than "nature," supporting students who would normally not be able to afford private music lessons is an important part of the mission of the school.
The Suzuki School of Newton is one of the largest Suzuki schools in the nation. It has an integrated arts preschool with 30 students, a teacher development program, and 22 Suzuki trained faculty in various instruments. With the growth of the school over its 27-year history, it has existed in six different locations. Its current home is in Temple Reyim of Auburndale.
