Great Conversations -- Paul Greiling
Paul Greiling is LLCCs master of moderating interesting discussions. His new four-session course will be similar to his previous Great Decisions classes, but we wont be using the Great Decisions books. Instead, Paul will be using videos and personally chosen handouts to spur discussions about new topics selected based on their immediate relevance. The goal of each session will be to have a back-and-forth, informed conversation about four timely topics:
Artificial Intelligence, its potential impact, good and bad, on the future of our society and humanity;
Social media, is it an aid to communication or intrusion in our privacy;
Mobile phones, their role in AI and their potential health risk;
Democracy, can these technologies be utilized in its preservation or its subversion.
These topics are complex, and because the class format will be open-ended, its very likely the sessions will blend into one continuous conversation with no specific boundaries. As new technologies are introduced, Paul will introduce a brief, simplistic overview of the what, why, when, and how of each technology. Class attendees will receive an advance email containing background articles and web sites for videos on each topic. During class, participants will be encouraged to offer their opinions, comments, and questions for the class to discuss.
Paul Greiling has led the Great Decisions class in the past. Dr. Greiling was a Professor at UCLA and Manager of a research microelectronics laboratory at Hughes Research Labs in Malibu CA. This Course has been rescheduled to April 5, 12, 19, & 26, 2022 Four Sessions Senior Center, San Luis Obispo $20 for LLCC members, $40 for non-members
