Location History:
On the outskirts of Rockville, Indiana stretches an old road which runs between two sections of forest.
Where the road ends at a clearing between the trees, stands an incredible and ominous set of buildings.
Youve finally made your way to the haunted Indiana State Sanatorium!
On March 5, 1907, the State of Indiana appropriated $30,000 to search for 500 acres of land in which to build a hospital for patients of the tuberculosis epidemic.
The towns of Laurel, Rockwell, Spencer, and Greencastle were in the final bid for the facility. After raising extra funds as an incentive, land 3 miles east of Rockville was chosen in 1908 as the site for the Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital.
The Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital was completed in the winter of 1910 and opened on April 1, 1911.
In 1919 the name of the Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital was changed to Indiana State Sanatorium.
In March of 1922, a new superintendents building was planned for construction. In excavating an area for the foundation, several old furnaces were uncovered. Historical research by the local newspaper found that a distillery operated on the site in 1831 and was built possibly earlier than could be evidenced by record.
A new building to accommodate 100 male patients was completed on December 15, 1936. This building was connected to the original building by a heated tunnel. The basement of this building held supplies, storage, and contained suites for employees to stay.
In 1950, a large dedication service occurred in the chapel of the sanatorium while the 1960s saw the construction of a nursing home building and several residences.
In 2012, the last patents were transferred from Indiana State Sanatorium (known by then as Lee Alan Bryant Healthcare Center). The buildings closed and the property was sold.
On December 31, 2020 the property was sold to the current owners.
