Claudio Monteverdi's "Vespers of 1610"
Vespers of 1610 :: Claudio Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 :: The Vespers of 1610 is a masterpiece and milestone of Western music, one that is rarely performed. The 90-minute work is a collection of 13 separate Latin hymns that are based on the Hours of the Divine Officeprayers of the Catholic church that remained structurally unchanged for 1500 years. This holiday production of the New Resonance Orchestra and the Marigny Opera House will be a Festival of Light, representing through music, movement and lighting, the return of the sun from the darkest days of the year: the winter solstice.
The production features 13 musicians and 13 singers, as well as 9 dancers, and a lighting director/projectionist. The cathedral-like, Romanesque space of the Marigny Opera House provide superb acoustics for the music, as well as an ideal setting for movement, light and dance.
