Beattie Mansion is one of the most haunted houses in Missouri, and perhaps anywhere in the country!
Paranormal experiences at this amazing location may be very intense, and includes disembodied voices, shadows, apparitions, and poltergeist activity.
Location History:
St. Joseph, Missouri is full of amazing stories and historic buildings. This is where the outlaw Jesse James met his end, and where the western portion of The Pony Express began.
You could spend hours walking the streets and thinking about the incredible events in this old city. There is plenty to learn about the many notable people who were born in St. Joseph, such as news personality Walter Cronkite, rapper Eminem, and the Hanging Judge Isaac Parker.
If you travel Main Street, you will soon arrive at a stone wall which surrounds a large building which towers over the neighborhood. Its time to take a walk inside and meet the spirits of Beattie Mansion!
In 1854 Armstrong and Eliza Beattie built the house that would become known as The House on the Hill, Beattie Mansion. Armstrong Beattie was known to be the first banker in St. Joseph, which led to him being the only person elected as mayor of St. Joseph for 5 terms.
After a terrible ordeal with Cholera, Armstrong died in 1878 with Eliza passing away 2 years later. As they had no children, the home was sold to the Ladies Union Benevolent Association. Beattie Mansion became a home for those who were homeless or otherwise in distress.
In 1895 Beattie Mansion became the Memorial Home for the Aged for 100 years. In 1995, the mentally ill and those with substance abuse issues were housed inside the home. In 2004 Beattie Mansion was sold to owners who sought to turn the historic property into a bed and breakfast.
The Paranormal:
Beattie Mansion has more than 150 years of history that could be responsible for its rampant and sometimes frightening paranormal activity. The spirits within The House on the Hill have hindered renovations so severely, contractors often run from the property, never to return!
During your investigations with us at Beattie Mansion, you may encounter the spirit of Eliza. Shes been seen walking the halls of the second floor. If you ask, perhaps Eliza will stop and chat with you. Or you could go into one of the rooms and visit the child spirit who is known to laugh and yell.
If youd rather hang around the first floor, you may catch a glimpse of shadowy adults and children who like to walk through the kitchen. Or take walk down in the basement, where you might find the male spirit who walks around, laughing and taunting those who enter his domain.
The many uses of Beattie Mansion over the years has contributed to the strong energy that remains. Perhaps youd like to visit with the restless souls of the homeless, friendless, and elderly. They may have some amazing stories to tell. You could head upstairs and pay your respects to Eliza Beattie, who loved the house so much that she never left.
