Adventures in Opera: Preview of The MetLive in HD - Rigoletto -- John Frey
Your favorite opera expert John Frey will enhance your enjoyment of the upcoming New York Met Opera Season Broadcasts that will be shown at the PAC at Cal Poly and your local movie theaters.  LLCC is sponsoring John's previews for each of these operas prior to their showings in the theater venues. The previews will be a discussion of the plots and characters that will prepare you to better understand and enjoy these new MET productions.

Rigoletto is Verdis operatic masterpiece without heroes. Of the five principal roles, four are basically evil: the licentious Duke of Mantua; Rigoletto, the Dukes malevolent, mocking jester; Sparafucile, a professional assassin; Maddalena, Sparafuciles prostitute sister who lures his victims to their death. Gilda, Rigolettos daughter, is an innocent girl who sacrifices her life for the Duke after he has raped her.

The theme of the opera is the unforeseen consequences of a curse and of revenge.  Monterone, a courtier, pronounces a curse on the Duke for ravishing his daughter and on Rigoletto for mocking him. The Dukes courtiers abduct Rigolettos daughter to avenge the jesters insults. Rigoletto plots to kill the Duke because he rapes his daughter. In the end the jesters vengeance backfires as the assassin kills his daughter to save the Duke.
