Black Point Theatre presents The Children by Lucy Kirkwood
A small cottage on the east coast of England.
A summer's evening.
The sound of the sea.
This is the setting for Lucy Kirkwood's "The Children." It is the makeshift home of Robin and Hazel, retired nuclear physicists, their children grown and moved on, who had hoped to live out their days together as dairy farmers on their small farm. A disaster at the nearby nuclear plant, their former place of employment, has forced them to abandon the farm and seek shelter outside the exclusion zone, where they wait for their world to return to normal.
Without warning, Rose, a former friend and co-worker, appears on their doorstep after an absence of 38 years. Her arrival causes all three of them to re-evaluate themselves, their relationships, their past, and their uncertain future.
"The Children" was written by Lucy Kirkwood and was first performed at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 2016 with Francesca Annis, Deborah Findlay, and Ron Cook. It premiered on Broadway produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club with the original cast. It received two Tony Award nominations for Best Play and Best Featured Actress (Findlay.)
