Perseverance: Dancing Through Lifes Changes
Welcome to the 53rd BHS Annual African Diaspora Dance Winter Showcase presented by the African-American Studies Department. The students have worked very hard all semester since returning back to school after the pandemic and we are proud of their progress.
As a department, we dedicate this show to the great and iconic legend Dr. Zakarya Papa Zak Diouf who impacted many students in the Afro-Haitian Dance Department and throughout the Bay Area for over 30 years. Papa enlightened many communities with the history of African traditions where his knowledge of dance and drumming gave children and adults the understanding and the respect of African cultures. His wisdom helped bridge the gap between the masses where all races could come together and dance as one. The movements that Papa taught and the conversations with the drums that were communicated through dance will last for generations to come and we are humbly thankful to have been in the presence of an icon. Papa Zak will be deeply missed and his legacy lives on within us.
Thank you for your continuous support of the Arts and the students in our program.
