Rupa And The April Fishes
In 2005, Rupa approached Todd Brown at the Red Poppy saying she'd like to play there. He listened to her music at that time and was not sure it was the right fit. Until then, as a solo artists with a violin accompaniment, Rupa had been performing original songs rooted mostly in the American folk tradition. But she said "No wait...I'm writing a body of music right now that is trying to give voice to a mosaic identity, a new sound." This was a new direction, the beginning of what has now become an international love story of music, travel and conversations. Through ties made through the Red Poppy and around the Mission arts community, Rupa & the April Fishes was created--a vibrant group of SF musicians who sail across musical traditions from French chanson to Latin cumbia, from reggae to raga, fro jazz to ska, borrowing gestures, reinterpreting narratives and creating a sound that has left audiences in a frenzy and music critics at a loss for how categorize the sound. Perhaps the best description comes from TimeOut Chicago who calls the music "global agit-pop." In the past year, the band has sold out major SF venues, toured extensively in Europe, Canada, the US and Mexico, played the Montreal Jazz Festival, Central Park's Summerstage and SF's epic Outside Lands. Their debut album "eXtraOrdinary rendition" was hailed as one of the top world music releases on iTunes in 2008 and has been featured on NPR and national European and Latin American radio stations. All of the musicians who play with this group see the Red Poppy as a crucial meeting place, an incubation space that is unique in an era where the commercialization of music at times removes it from its most powerful purpose, forging immediate connections across supposed divides.
The band is honored to return home to play a benefit concert for the Art House to help it continue its programming and further its important mission. These special intimate acoustic concerts will feature the band in its living room format with several local musical friends.
