Anything Goes
The celebration of Hockaday's Centennial Theater season continues with its production of Anything Goes with music and lyrics by the unforgettable Cole Porter. Debuting in 1934, Anything Goes is a marvelous show offering opportunities to recreate the musical theater style of the 30s and 40s. The musical is complete with amazing tap numbers, campy jokes, unlikely happy endings, and eminently hummable songs like "De-Lovely," "I Get a Kick Out Of You" and "Anything Goes." The show is set aboard the ocean liner S. S. American, where evangelist-turned-nightclub singer Reno Sweeney is bound for London from New York. Her pal Billy Crocker has fallen in love at first sight with heiress Hope Harcourt and has stowed away to be near his love. Hope is traveling to London escorted by her mother and her fiancé, Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Joining the unlikely love triangle, aboard the ship are Public Enemy #13, the second-rate gangster Moonface Martin, and his sidekick-in-crime Bonnie. With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors, and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Moonface join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope's heart.
