Mama'z Muezz written & performed by Monique Franklin November 12 Doors 6:30pm | Show 7pm Langston Hughes
Mama'z Muezz is a play that examines the experiences of African-American womxn who are mothers glimpsed from the present day, historical and ancestral vantage points. The presentation features music, monologues, song, dance and spoken word pieces based on the playwrights own life and research of experiences of notable and everyday black womxn who were and are mothers. Mamaz Muezz explores the questions: who was I, who I am, and who am I going to be. This show is culled from a cross-section of realities, dreams, and nightmares illuminating and intimately exploring artifacts of a unique and collective condition. In exploring the experiences of African- American womxn who are mothers we will uncover what it means to be an individual beneath the hat of motherhood, learn what children teach their mothers (the truth), the rub of society against the fabric of their families (the struggles) and what nurtures and inspires their spirits (love, the living, and the ancestors). Mamaz Muezz is a loving invitation for black womxn who are or have been mothers to commune around our self-discovery, healing and self-actualization.
