Improve Your Soil Through Cover Cropping
Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive, thriving garden. Did you know fall is the perfect time to improve soil fertility for next year's harvest and well-planned soil management increases drought resiliency, reduces weed pressure, and sequesters carbon?
UC Master Gardeners Delise Weir and Michele Whizin will show you how to improve soil health in your vegetable beds to absorb and maintain water while improving drainage by growing a winter cover crop.
Learn how growing a winter cover crop will protect and feed your soil, make spring bed preparation easier, improve drainage and water retention, and help develop a healthy, balanced microbial biota below the soil surface.
You'll learn which crop to use for your particular goals, how to sow, when to cut down, and what to do with the biomass plant residue.
