Sherlock Holmes: The Broken Mirror
SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE BROKEN MIRROR by William Gillette The Play: The intrigue howls outside and the wit flows freely inside 221B Baker Street in Victorian London throughout William Gillette's, SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE BROKEN MIRROR. Adapted from the original play, Jeff Garrett embodies everyone from Holmes and Watson to Moriarty and Miss Alice Sumner, a mysterious outsider from Germany, who becomes the focal point of an epic struggle between Holmes and Moriarty to prevent, or to ignite, the first World War. Watson, Mrs. Hudson and other "irregulars" on both sides of the law attempt to sway the outcome of this titanic match pitting good against evil. The competition of the men for Alice's attention increases with each plot twist evolving into a deep compassion after she reaches her own startling conclusion.
Gillette's celebration of the rich storytelling heritage of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle serves as a vehicle for what is a moving investigation of relationships, both heartfelt and manipulative. The "broken mirror" is a metaphorical convention used by the playwright to describe the multiple identities, dark and light, that we all contain.
