George Akerlof: Animal Spirits
The term "animal spirits" was coined by John Maynard Keynes in describing the gloom and despondence leading to the Great Depression. Acclaimed economist George Akerlof (with Robert Shiller) details the pervasive of confidence, fear, bad faith, corruption, a concern for fairness, and the stories we tell ourselves out our economic fortunes on the performance of the macro economy. In Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism, Akerlof shows how Reagonomics, Thatcherism, and the rational expectations revolution failed to account for human psychology, and asserts the necessity of an active government role in economics. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with Elliott Bay Book Company.
