Alexandre Koberidze Germany & Georgia 2021 2h 31m Series - GERMAN CINEMA NOW!
About The monthly film series GERMAN CINEMA NOW! is curated by Goethe Pop Up Seattle. This year, the series explores themes of disruption and continuity to inspire public dialogue about the ways in which the past shapes our moment and can inform a radically different future.
About the film: In the Georgian riverside town of Kutaisi, summertime romance and World Cup fever are in the air. After a pair of chance encounters, pharmacist Lisa and soccer player Giorgi find their plans for a date undone when they both awaken magically transformed with no way to recognize each other.
(Alexandre Koberidze, Germany & Georgia, 2021, 151 min, in Georgian with English subtitles) Description courtesy of MUBI.
Despite the fairy tale premise and elements such as a talking rain gutter, the film is less an exercise in magical realism than an effort at drawing out magic from the mundane. To be sure, its drenched in whimsy, but its testament to the vitality of Koberidzes vision that it never becomes cloying. Giovanni Marchini Camia, Filmmaker Magazine
Great films often feel like a secret youve been told, and thats how it is with Alexandre Koberidzes What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?, a gorgeous modern fairy tale about ill-starred love, mysticism, soccer and street dogs, which is also perhaps the most bewitching love letter to a hometown that Ive ever seen.
