SongSpace Presents Alex Hamburger
We are back in the Sanctuary at First Unitarian Church, and so happy to invite you to join us for this special concert by Alex Hamburger and her band!
Growing up in Washington DC as the daughter of two accomplished artists, a drummer and a dancer, Alex's love for music started very early. Alex began studying classical flute at age 7 and soon began improvising and sitting in on her fathers gigs. She later began studying jazz formally and became a member of Paul Carr's Jazz Academy of Washington where she got to play and sing all over the country with incredible musicians such as Randy Brecker, Javon Jackson, Warren Wolf and Carmen Bradford. She attended SUNY Purchase as a James Moody Scholar and studied with world renowned musicians such as Gary Smulyan, Jon Faddis, Todd Coolman, Kenny Washington, Ingrid Jensen and Doug Weiss. Alex was also selected as a member of the Banff Jazz and Creative Music Program in 2017, the Focusyear band at the JazzCampus in Basel, Switzerland in 2018, and the upcoming Strathmore Artist in Residency Class in 2022.
But she is so much more than your typical jazz musician. Her debut quartet CD, "And She Spoke", brings together a collection of music inspired by the diverse and ever changing concept of the female voice, featuring new arrangements of music by female composers (Geri Allen, Mary Lou Williams, Joni Mitchell), original musical settings of the poetry of female poets (Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison and Alex's own grandmother, poet and activist Ana Maria R. Codas), and more.
We are looking forward to a special Thursday night of her music at SongSpace!
