Michael Gene Sullivan: Plot, Character, Action
Don't you hate it when you're watching a play, and suddenly the plot and characters stop for some unmotivated movement or worse, a physical "joke?" Don't you hate it even more when the physical life and plot of the show pause for a soul-searching bit of "character development?" And then, suddenly both character development and motivated movement stop to pick up the thread of the plot? Don't you hate that? And don't you hate it most of all when the play you're watching is yours? Whether working on a new piece or fine tuning a script close to completion it is essential writers find a way to do three things at once: Plot, character, action.
The objective of this class is to help writers think like directors regarding action, like actors with character, all the while telling the story the writer needs heard. It's all about keeping three balls in the air at the same time. By the end of this class each writer should have a better vision of how to make a more complete play out of a current project, or a planned script.
