Josquin! Secular Songs and Instrumental Music
December 3 brings Barefoots tribute concert to this years dead white male of choice in the world of Early Music, Josquin Des Prez, aka Jossie LeBloitte, aka Josquinius Pratensis (the list of akas goes on and on). Andy Canepa, Peter Hallifax, Julie Jeffrey, Phoebe Jevtovic Rosquist and Shira Kammen combine in a program of instrumental and vocal secular masterpieces by the most famous of all Early Renaissance composers.
Sometimes there is a good reason why composers are famous. They are really good! Josquin has become a household word this year (he died exactly 500 years ago), and even made it into the New Yorker, so, many people who never heard much about him before are now going around asking their musician or music nerd friends Whats up with this Josquin? To which, to save you the bother of saying hes a really good composer you can just direct them to this concert of his lovely secular music. And, to his twenty mass settings, sixty motets and over fifty other secular songs which well no doubt get around to later. For now, were cherry picking, and we cant wait to share the pieces with you.
Andy Canepa; keyboards, Peter Hallifax and Julie Jeffrey; viols, Phoebe Jevtovic Rosquist; soprano, and Shira Kammen; viol and vielle.
