Baraka
From Ron Fricke, the acclaimed director of Samsara and cinematographer of Koyaanisquatsi, a mind-expanding, spiritual journey across disparate cultures and civilizations
After cutting his teeth as a cameraman on director Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisquatsi, Ron Fricke (Samsara) made his own feature directing debut with this breathtaking, wordless, one-of-a-kind cinematic meditation shot in 25 countries on six continents over the course of two years using a custom-designed 70mm camera. Inspired by the Sufi word meaning "breath of life," Baraka is a mind-expanding, spiritual journey across disparate cultures and civilizations, juxtaposing ancient ritual against modern technology in a dazzling attempt to grasp the full, mysterious breadth of human experience. Filmed entirely without dialogue in a stunning cascade of crystalline, time-lapse images, Baraka is quite simply breathtaking. Featuring the music of Dead Can Dance. (USA, 1992, 96 min., color, Blu-ray) "If man sends another Voyager to the distant stars and it can carry only one film on board, that film might be Baraka. It uses no language, so needs no translation. It speaks in magnificent images, natural sounds, and music both composed and discovered. It regards our planet and the life upon it. It stands outside of historical time. To another race, it would communicate: This is what you would see if you came here." Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
