Experts and Insights: MCC Faculty Speaker Series- September 30, 2021
Join us when MCC's Faculty Kate Midday presents "Language, Literature, and Learning: Calling for LatinX Inclusion" on September 30, 2021
While the LatinX population occupies the largest portion of our college and county's diversity, they are most often left out of our American curriculum and excluded from positions as knowledge-makers in higher education. Coupled with the marginalization of women's voices from the academic canon, the double-bind that exists at the intersection of LatinX and female subjectivities remains murky and mysterious for many of us who do not occupy these spaces, and remain unacknowledged or unarticulated by those who do. Using the sabbatical research from my 2021 Latin(a)X study, this session will connect the experiences of the larger LatinX community while seeking to point out vast differences amongst a large, rich swath of peoples and geographies gathered under the auspices of a single banner. Attendees will leave with reading lists, potential considerations for curriculum inclusions, a new appreciation and understanding of the LatinX variance of experiences, a recognition of how much we still have to learn as a diversifying community and college, and a more-ready approach to ensuring that all our students and neighbors are represented, respected, and understood.
