IN EMILY'S WORDS is a musical that follows the journey of English novelist Emily Brontë as she is writing her magnum opus: Wuthering Heights. The story of Cathy and Heathcliff comes to life in Emily's eyes, the characters jumping off the page as she is writing them, and Emily herself becoming more immersed in her tale as the musical progresses. It utilizes a show within a show construct, with equal care given both to Emily Brontë's journey as a female writer in the 1840s (publishing under a masculine pseudonym), as well as the journey of her characters. In a word, this musical is about imagination. Emily's imagination knew no bounds, and in spite of being a recluse and having seen very little of the world, she was able to craft a tragic, sweeping melodrama that has left a legacy nearly 200 years after her death. In the end, Emily Brontë pushes through her own personal battles, paving the way for generations of future female writers, as well as characters who are people of color who find agency and power through adversity.
