A fantastic double bill featuring Goli and The Sail Away Ladies; two groups consisting of friends who originally met at New England Conservatory and today present two very different approaches to contemporary string music. Goli (cellist Valerie Thompson and marimba player Vessela Stoyanova) play what they call "chamber music for the modern era" while Sail Away Ladies (who's impressive personnel includes Americana darling Sarah Jarosz on mandolin) present acoustic string music with an old timey slant. We can't wait for this show!
Goli plays chamber music for the modern era. A duo of misfit classical musicians with an appetite for world music that has cut its teeth in rock bands, world folk ensembles, symphony orchestras and the occasional free improv outlet, wrestling with the universal subjects of death and getting laid while playing the cello and marimba.
A groundbreaking contemporary acoustic quartet, The Sail Away Ladies features Eden MacAdam-Somer and Mia Friedman on violin and vocals, Sarah Jarosz on mandolin and vocals, and Ariel Friedman on cello and vocals. With intricate arrangements, soaring harmonies, infectious grooves and intuitive improvisations, this virtuosic ensemble transforms traditional folk music, world music, and contemporary repertoire, combining an old-time sensibility with a truly adventurous spirit.
