Electric Telescope Theatre Group's "... and Now This Happens"
The focus of the play is the killing of Daunte Wright by a Brooklyn Center Police Office and the subsequent protests. The play reveals the story of a community dealing with a sudden social trauma while simultaneously awaiting the verdict in the trial of the police officer accused of murdering George Floyd. The Electric Telescope Theatre Group is a radically inclusive ensemble with white, African-American and recent immigrant performers, as well as performers with disabilities. The script contains monologues and dialogues synthesized from online neighborhood posts by residents of the near northern suburbs of Minneapolis. Together the cast collaboratively devised a theatrical work that is their response to what happened to Daunte Wright. A video version of the play was presented at the 2021 MN Fringe Festival.
The performance also contains an original song by singer-songwriter Robin Rayfield. Our goal is to facilitate expression and raise awareness surrounding community issues of race and policing. At the end of the performance, we invite members of the community to collaborate in our open workshop process of discussion, theatrical improvisation and collaborative writing.
