The Red Tent
Join us for a day of pampering, celebration, relaxation and education!
The Red Tent will offer services provided by local RI vendors to honor the women in our community.
Walk through the doors of the Rennaisance Providence Marriott hotel, have your photo taken by our paparazzi, pay your $10 admission and have your hand stamped....and then join us for a day of luxury.
Walk into the Beauty Suite and have your hair styled, a mini-manicure, mini-facial, eyebrow threading, mendhi tattooing, and makeup applied.
Stroll into the Medical Suite and have a blood pressure screening, cholesterol reading, learn CPR, and get information about women's health issues.
Travel into the Wellness Suite and take a bellydancing class, yoga class, or experience Reiki or meditation.
Venture into our Red Tent (yes, a real Red Tent) and join a storytelling circle where women's stories will be shared and honored.
Then take a break and visit our World Marketplace where women's crafts from Rhode Island and around the world are for sale.
Take a short elevator ride up to our Activist Suite and meet women who are working to make the world safer for women and girls, and learn more about social service agencies around the world. Then take a break and have a yummy breakfast or lunch in our Ladies Lounge area.
Make it a day to celebrate with the women in your life (sorry guys, this event is open only to women).
The Red Tent is... an area constructed from beautiful fabrics, carpets and pillows that provides a nurturing and peaceful place where women can come to gather and tell their stories, because what women really need is a good listening to. Candles, bowls of rose petals and beautiful altars help set the tone. Around the parameter of the tent, women are able to partake of such services as massage, reflexology, makeup application, hair styling, health screenings and more, all services offered by women in our community.
The Red Tent will be a part of the second Until the Violence STOPS: Providence festival which is a week-long festival raising awareness and funds to bring the issue of violence against women and girls center stage in our city. The festival issues a call of action to all Rhode Islanders through theater, art, spoken word, photography, performance and community events: demand an end to violence against women and girls, and become an active partner in ending it! Events will take place all around Providence, with each event raising funds and awareness about local organizations that are currently working to end violence against women and girls. The Red Tent will be one of the festival events.
Why a Red Tent? In many cultures, such as Chinese, some African cultures, and the Romany culture, red is a symbolic color of strength or female power. The tent itself is rooted in an ancient Judeo-Christian-Islamic history of womens gathering spaces. Women used to go to the red tent while they were giving birth or menstruating they had to because the men in their communities feared contamination from these biological processes. Yet in the end, the red tents became community spaces where women went to learn from one another, to be in community, and above all, to celebrate life. We draw upon these numerous rich traditions when we call this project a Red Tent. Inspired by Anita Diamants novel, The Red Tent is a space and time to honor our stories and promote healing. This event is strictly reserved for women (nothing personal guys!) We create this event to honor the women in our state and invite all women in our community to join us in this gathering and healing space.
Every 60 minutes, story-sharing circles will gather inside the Red Tent, with each session during the day covering a specific issue such as domestic violence, sexual assault, elder care, birth, LGBT issues and other topics. You will be able to sign up for sessions first thing in the morning, and are then invited to take part in other events going on at the venue between sessions (like massage, makeup, mini-manicures, health screenings and similar offerings provided by women in our community).
Our Red Tent will be the collaboration of the creative energies of organizations and individuals around the state of Rhode Island, V-Day, and the Providence Pussy Posse, a group of RI women committed to ending violence against women and girls. The story-sharing events will be shaped especially for us by Red Tent facilitators including local social workers, psychotherapists, community activists and storytellers from around New England.
