The Dark Is Light Enough
THE PLAY Set in an Austrian country house during the winter of 1848-49, tensions are felt from the Hungarians uprising against their Austrian rulers. The play is concerned with the impact this rebellion has on the inhabitants of the house. Foremost of them is the countessan eminent lady of independence, wit, compassion and honesty. At the bottom of the heap is a highly intelligent scoundrel with no character at all. Apart from several other well-drawn people, representing either amusing worldliness or earnest convictions, the play concentrates on the ordeal of the countess' conscience. Caught between the empire that supports her comfort and way of life and the revolution that would free her friends and neighbors, her determination to protect the scoundrel, despite his flaws, from a punishment she deems unjust threatens to throw her family into turmoil.
