Prospect and Crown Heights Homebrew Tour
Despite New York's gnat-size apartments, NYC homebrewers refuse to let space limitations detract them from their mission: crafting some of the city's tastiest beer. On this tour, you'll meet three of the city's finest amateur brewers, who will display their set-ups, discuss their craft and, most importantly, open up their stash of superlative beer.
After the whirlwind that was my book tour and my daughter's impending birth (any day now!), today's tour is going to be really fun. We'll start the tour off by visiting Dylan Bargteil, a PhD student in physics who began brewing after suffering a crisis: no good pizza near his apartment. This led him to make his own dough, spurring his love of fermentation and brewing. He should be pouring a rye witbier, a rauchbier fermented with kölsch yeast, a honeyed saison and a brown porter with peanut butter and cacao nibs.
Next, we're headed to meet designer Matt Raw, who will be serving a black IPA, a British mild (or perhaps a bitter) and one more treat.
Lastly, we're going to finish at Bitter & Esters, a terrific brew-on-premise shop with a kegerator filled with plenty of experiments. Come thirsty.
Eat a big lunch. Your guide is NYC beer journalist Joshua M. Bernstein, the author of Brewed Awakening and The Complete Beer Course.
