LET'S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE: The Films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers
Join film scholar Philip Harwood for a lively exploration of the legendary musical partnership that gave us some of the most magical moments in movie history
Fellow RKO contract star Katharine Hepburn once said, "Fred gives Ginger class, and Ginger gives Fred sex". We certainly see great chemistry in the musical films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Starring in nine classic musicals at RKO, and then a reunion film at MGM, Astaire and Rogers not only advanced the genre of dance in the Hollywood Musical, but during a period of national economic crisis, this pair pulled us away from the misery of the world, danced their way into our hearts, and fulfilled our dreams. Film Historian Philip Harwood discusses the wonderful films of Astaire and Rogers, with clips from such films as Top Hat, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, The Barkleys of Broadway, and others.
Philip Harwood has had a life-long passion for the arts, especially film. He is currently an Adjunct Lecturer in the Hutton House Lectures at LIU: C.W. Post, and teachers at the 92nd Street Y , and the JCC In Manhattan. He was Coordinator for Lifelong Learning at Queens College, where he also programmed the annual Summer Film Festival. He is a published author: his essay, Jack Benny In Hollywood, appears in the anthology, Well! Reflections On The Life And Career of Jack Benny, published by Bear Manor Media.
