Location History

Are you prepared to join us at one of the oldest and possibly the most haunted locations in Mississippi?

Built nearly two centuries ago in 1826, the McNutt house earned its moniker when purchased by Mississippis twelfth governor, Alexander McNutt and his wife (Betsy) in 1829. The couple added the rear wing in 1832.

In the Spring of 1862, Mississippi became a Civil War battleground and President Lincoln tasked General Ulysses S. Grant with capturing Vicksburg in order for the Union to take control of the Mississippi River. During a six-week siege, Vicksburg was surrounded, supply lines were cut off, and the city was fired upon continually.

Citizens of Vicksburg dug more than 500 caves into the hillside to protect themselves from the shelling. With supplies cut off, soldiers and civilians were forced to eat mules, horses, dogs, and a bread made from corn and dried peas. Rats were sold in the butcher shops. Almost half of the defending Confederate force was sick or in the hospital.

Confederate General Pemberton surrendered on July 4, 1863. Of the surrender, a Confederate Chaplain wrote: They knew that we had surrendered to famine, not to them.

By the end of the war, nearly all of Mississippi lay in ruins; but the McNutt house remained standing.

The house was purchased by the Wright family and generations of the family lived there until 1966. Having fallen into disrepair, it was donated to the Vicksburg Historical Society and purchased by Elvin and Pam McFerrin in 2010.

When they purchased the McNutt House, Elvin and Pam McFerrin knew they were purchasing a home with history, and they quickly learned of their Paranormal residents.

The Paranormal:

Alone in Maggies Hall, named for Governor McNutts niece who died on the property of yellow fever, Pam McFerrin witnessed all of the doors slam shut at once. She initially blamed the wind but discovered the two outside doors both closed inward and one of the doors slammed closed from the other direction debunking the possibility of wind.

Governor McNutts niece, Maggie, died of yellow fever on the property. Years later, when the property was a Montessori school, students would often ask why the other little girl never had to come after playtime. Maggie is often seen playing in the courtyard.

Marley, the six-year-old daughter of a McFerrin family member, once explained that a little girl told me to look under the deck for this dime and the little girl told Marley that her names Maggie.

Located on the property is the Magill House, named for its permanent resident, Confederal Lt. David Magill whose final resting place is on the grounds. Magill was hit by a cannonball that severed his arm and then blew up behind him, leaving him with a severe head wound that led to his death. Investigators believe they have captured EVPs of his spirit stating his name is David.

During an episode of A&Es My Ghost Story the camera captured a kitchen cabinet door slamming after investigators opened the cabinets and asked Maggie to slam the cabinet doors.

Owner Pam McFerrin uncovered bones while walking on the property one day. Police and a forensics team confirmed it was a human skeleton from the hips down and estimated it to be around 200 years old. Three different, unrelated paranormal groups have seen a full-bodied apparition in a hollow behind Maggies Hall. All three described the same man with a beard and long trench coat appearing in the same area Pam found bones.

The spirit of a woman has been seen coming down the staircase and disappearing into a wall.

Disembodied voices, knocks, and footsteps have been reported by several investigators.
