January 11-19, 2014
Five Performances Only!
Riverdale Rising Stars Jr. proudly presents THE MUSIC MAN JR. for a limited engagement of five performances only: Saturday, January 11 at 7:00pm; Sunday, January 12 at 1:30pm; Saturday, January 18 at 7:00pm; and Sunday, January 19 at 1:30pm and 5:30pm.
Strike up the band and start waving those American flags: THE MUSIC MAN JR. is coming to Riverdale! In this 90-minute production of the classic musical comedy, a rascally traveling salesman comes to a sleepy Midwestern town to con the locals into creating a hometown boys' band, and gets far more than he bargained for. Before you can say "76 Trombones," all of River City, Iowa awakens to the transformative power of making music in their community.
Featuring a cast of 31 young performers, ages 7 to 11 from Riverdale, Yonkers, Upper Manhattan, and beyond, performances of THE MUSIC MAN JR. will be held at the Riverdale YM-YWHA, located at 5625 Arlington Avenue (two blocks west of Riverdale Avenue, just north of West 256 Street), in Riverdale, Bronx, NY.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for seniors and students if purchased online, or $22 for adults and $14 for seniors and students if purchased at the door prior to showtime. THE MUSIC MAN JR. is directed by Julian Rozzell Jr., with music direction by Justin Fischer. The design team includes Penelope Margeotes (Costumes), David Pentz (Lighting), and Denise Eberly (Sound).
THE MUSIC MAN, starring Robert Preston and Barbara Cook, opened on Broadway in 1957, and was an immediate smash hit, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical (over such formidable competition as West Side Story), eventually running for 1,375 performances. The original cast album won a Grammy, and was number one on the Billboard charts for 12 weeks. The Oscar-winning film adaptation was released in 1962, and the Beatles had a chart-topping with the show's song "'Til There Was You" in 1963. Dick Van Dyke and a young Christian Slater starred in a 1980 New York revival, and the show also appeared on Broadway in 2000. A television remake starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth premiered in 2003.
