PAPA NATIONAL OYE & KINSHASA MBOKA TE
SUNDAY DECEMBER 15 @ 1:30PM - W/ Q&A
PAPA NATIONAL OYE A wicked political satire about African dictators, this film tells the story of the president of a fictitious African nation who spends a sleepless night playing checkers with a pot-smoking vagabond who is claimed to be the "all-around champion". However the rules of the game entail opponents howling vulgar and foul obscenities at one another. The Champion proceeds to insult, and trounce the President. His reward - and fate - are not exactly unexpected in this hilarious send-up of living under tyranny. Directed by Bakupa Kanyinda Balufu, 1996, 40 min, comedy, Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire) & Gabon, French/English subt. Shown with Kinshasa Mboka Té.
KINSHASA MBOKA TE Kinshasa mboka té...A city that exceeds the norm beyond anything we could imagine, it is a paradox and a spectacle, sometimes completely disjoined, with an approach to life and to survival that reinvents itself each day. Just when we think we have tamed it, it reacts in a way that is completely unpredictable. One must remain alert, awake, never sleep. Kinshasa belongs to no one, but at the same time to everyone. What people experience there can never be experienced anywhere else and each person brings their own unique flavor. See for yourself in this fascinating documentary. Directed by Douglas Ntimasiemi, 52 min., DR Congo/Belgium, Documentary, French/ English subt. Shown with Papa National Oyé.
