Bellissima Opera premiere: "On Call: COVID-19" honoring stories of Pandemic Healthcare Workers
A new 60-minute virtual opera about the power of friendship in unprecedented times. Composer David Shenton & librettist Christine Steyer. In English with English subtitles.
Six frontline health care workers discover in a series of "Zoom-like" calls that kindness and compassion can be as precious a tool as a vaccine and a ventilator.
Featuring the Bellissima Opera Cast directed by Carl Ratner: Gwendolyn Brown, contralto; Jeong Eun Joo, soprano; Christine Steyer, soprano; Emanuel-Cristian Caraman, tenor; Russell Hoke, baritone; Carl Ratner, baritone; David Shenton, piano.
You are invited to attend the Post-Opera Artist Meet & Greet immediately following each performance with a minimum $10 donation. Visit https://workinginconcert.org/covidopera or find your Stage Door Pass here at Brown Paper Tickets-- https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/5092584. 20% of the Post-Opera Artist Meet & Greet donations go to The Greater Chicago Food Depository.
The opera's three scenes look in on a series of Zoom calls by six characters: medics from diverse geographical regions who meet in this safe space to share their pandemic struggles. It is April 2020. In a moment of crisis, a Chicago nurse connects virtually with health-care worker friends, each calling from a different zone: Seoul in Korea, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon, New York City, and Lombardy, Italy.
"On Call" is drawn from 200 articles about healthcare workers confronting the pandemic and is created by Bellissima Opera and produced by Working In Concert, as part the "Tales of Transcendence" Series. See more at Bellissimaopera.com
