Del Toro's obsession with monster movies serves him well in this homage to the great Japanese Kaiju (giant monster) films. A transdimensional rift in the ocean floor unleashes a horrifying wave of attacks by giant monsters on an unsuspecting human race. In response, the nations of the world come together to build massive robots to defend themselves. As expected, Del Toro's mastery of visual effects and his skill with creating deep emotional ties with his characters makes for a thrilling and involving sci-fi action film.
