Design Workshop with Thea Colman, Saturday Class

In this class, Thea will cover her basic design steps, and work through them with the class. At the end of the workshop, each student will have learned the steps to custom design a basic cowl.
Using yarn brought by the students, Thea will discuss the aspects of the fiber that affect design choice, what to think about when choosing motifs, and some of the options of motif usage when working up a basic design plan.

Topics covered will include:weighing different fiber characteristics; how drape, color, texture, etc. can affect design choices; the pros/cons of using different types of motif; pairing motifs together and with other design elements; and very basic charting.

Some experience in knitting scarves or cowls is encouraged, but any level of detail from basic stitch patterns to more complex motifs can be accommodated. Less advanced students will work with less advanced motifs.

Students should know how to read/use a basic chart.
Each student will need to bring 400-600 yards of yarn (an excuse to use up those skeins you have no idea what to do with!) their own needles, and 1-2 ideas of a motif they think will look nice in their yarn.  For needles, please bring a set of the size recommended on the ball band, plus one or two sizes larger. If students wish to work in the round, circulars would be best.

Note from Thea:  Because everybody has a different learning style and knitting process, students will leave the class in different stages of their cowl design.  Everyone will have the steps necessary to design their own, but I am betting that a few will be knitting after the 4 hours and a few will still be charting or deciding on motifs.   You can't rush these things, so don't worry if you are in the second camp
