Sustainable Signage and Green Building: An Opportunity to Enhance Appearance while Lowering Embodied Carbon and Long-Run Cost

Presented by:
Imperial Sign Corporation

Course description ~ Lumenpulse
This course will explore what makes LESs, unlike traditional sources, specifically in regards to their optics, size, light quality, precise controls, versatility, and long lifespan. This course will examine common LED lighting applications and introduce a variety of installations. The current industry is only scratching the surface of what LEDs can do and building professionals must rethink how to approach lighting a space.

Course description ~ Imperial Sign Corporation
This course looks at how innovative signage design and materials can contribute to sustainability goals for the construction sector, including obtaining the highest-possible environmental building certifications, such as LEED and Zero Carbon Building. While the universe of sustainable materials is evolving rapidly, substitution already results in superior appearance and longevityand thus more attractive buildings in the short- and long-termat no additional cost. Requiring a minimum standard of sustainable materials to be used in signage manufacturing thus acts as a catalyst in lowering embodied carbon throughout the life of a building, while yielding significant non-environmental benefits.

Learning objectives:
1. Understand the environmental impact of building signage, subject to fabrication methods
2. Discuss ways of incorporating signage into an assessment of embodied carbon in buildings, as well as the sustainable materials that already exist which can easily be substituted as a signage requirement
3. Understand the non-environmental benefits (e.g., appearance, longevity) that are gained from substitution to sustainable signage materials
4. Discuss additional innovative ways of decarbonizing building signage
