7 Potencias is a music and dance troupe based in Cuba!
This will be our first ever U.S. appearance! 7 Potencias will be arriving on November 10, 2013 to the U.S. for a series of workshops and performances in preparation for the 15th anniversary of the company. We want to showcase our work that spans across the years. This series of workshops and performances will be for a month in the San Francisco Bay.
7 Potencias is unique in that it is able to present authentic folkloric traditions. Many of its members are descendants of immigrants from Haiti, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands which informs their work. Putting this investigative work on stage and highlighting the stories learned from family members makes it one of the more reliable groups presenting this lesser known Cuban folklore.
7 Potencias was founded by close friends who all grew up in the same small city in the Oriente (Eastern) part of Cuba and studied together at performing arts schools and universities in Oriente and Havana. This close-knit group of musicians and dancers had been a part of many other dance troupes and participated in numerous national and international events and festivals. We decided to share our love of Afro-Cuban traditions and especially the lesser-known Oreinte traditions with wider audiences.
