Two new faces in Americana grace the carpets of The Lizard Lounge tonight. Annie and The Beekeepers music has been described as "American roots music, sweetly intimate with vast boot-stomping songwriting". Dietrich Strause and his excellent band perform Strauses songs which are a comfortable and careful mix of journeys, clever literary references, and striking imagery.
While rooted in the northeast, Annie and The Beekeepers have a sound that hails from anywhere between Liverpool and Harlan County. Annie and The Beekeepers have performed at SXSW, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Boston Folk Festival, UK's End of The Road, Bristol Ryhthm and Roots Reunion, and have shared stages with Josh Ritter, Justin Townes Earl, The Low Anthem, Lissie, David Wax Museum, and Scott McMicken (Dr Dog) amongst others. Since their 2007 debut, Annie and The Beekeepers have released two albums and an EP, including their most recent full-length, "My Bonneville", titled after Annie's first car. The internationally touring, Boston/NYC-based Americana group has received wide ranging critical praise from publications like The Boston Globe, Washington Post, American Songwriter, Paste Magazine, and Filter amongst others. Performer Magazine refers to Annie's music as "American roots music, sweetly intimate with vast boot-stomping songwriting".
Boston-based touring songwriter and performer Dietrich Strause release his third full length album on October 22nd, 2013.
On Saturday, November 16th at The Lizard Lounge he will be joined by Billy Beard on drums, Jim Larkin on bass, Laurence Scudder on viola, and Austin Nevins on guitar.
The new album "Little Stones to Break the Giant's Heart" stands tall, supported by a backbone of melodies and lyrics diligently crafted by Strause. The songs are a comfortable and careful mix of journeys, clever literary references, and striking imagery. Strause's songs are versatile personal, but universal enough to hook the masses. If the songs are the backbone, then the musicians Strause assembled are the blood that brings it to life. To record "Little Stones to Break the Giant's Heart", Dietrich teamed up with producer and guitarist Austin Nevins (Aoife O'Donovan, Josh Ritter) and a group of his longtime collaborators, an outfit of New England's finest Americana and folk musicians.
The album features Nevins on guitars, Billy Beard on drums (Patty Griffin, Session Americana), Jim Larkin on electric bass (Jesse Dee), Laurence Scudder on viola, Laura Cortese on fiddle, Sam Kassirer on piano and organ (Josh Ritter), and Zachariah Hickman on upright bass, bass clarinet, horns, and pump organ (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne). The backup singers include folk luminaries such as Rose Cousins, Amy Correia, and Anais Mitchell.
"Little Stones to Break the Giant's Heart" was recorded by Matt Malikowski at Dimension Sound Studios in Jamaica Plain, MA and Great North Sound Society in Parsonfield, ME. Grammy nominated album-artist, and Austin's brother, Peter Nevins contributed the artwork.
Strause will be hitting the road in September for most of the fall, celebrating the release of "Little Stones to Break the Giants Heart" with runs of shows with friends The Stray Birds, Annie Lynch & The Beekeepers, and Session Americana, and many more.
