Stabat Mater
This Palm Sunday program opens with a creative mix of selections from two settings of a 13th-century Christian hymn to Mary: Giovanni Battista Pergolesis celebrated 1736 version and J.S. Bachs modifications from a dozen years later. The result is an original interpretation for chamber orchestra and vocalists, conducted by Scott Youngs.
The program is rounded out by Haydn's Symphony #49, "La Passione," a title given the work after a performance during Holy Week in 1790 in the north German city of Schwerin. The Symphonys atmosphere was considered evocative of the Passion.
Scottsdale Presbyterian Church hosts this concert, with the generous underwriting of Gloria Pulido.
Free, but tickets are required for the limited seating available.
