The PA Firefly Festival in Kellettville on Friday, June 25, 2021, celebrates the annual emergence of Pennsylvania's official state insect, the firefly (aka a lightning bug). The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed a lot of annual public events, and the PA Firefly Festival is no exception. We've adapted the event to the "new normal". Now ALL guests must be registered, crowd size is strictly limited to 50 per night and the hours are now 7 pm to 12-midnight.
What hasn't changed is the celebration of firefly displays including the Synchronous Firefly in Kellettville, at 13558 Route 666, Tionesta, 16353. The event each night kicks off at 7-pm with live music from Matt Miskie (sponsored by the J. Bowman Proper Trust), snacks/refreshments, nature exhibits with the experts, and lots of PAFF T-Shirts and merchandise. At 9 pm, firefly experts will make presentations to the audience prior to the firefly viewing from 10 pm to Midnight.
For overnight lodging and accommodations, go to VisitPaGo.com or ForestCounty.com. Camping reservations for Kellettville or Tionesta Campgrounds can be made at Recreation.gov.
Space is limited to minimize the impact on the habitat and ensure safe social-distancing while optimizing the experience for visitors. All tickets/wristbands are Will-Call, so no need to print. Pick up your wristband(s) upon arrival at the festival or by 8:00 PM at the Registration Tent. Unclaimed wristbands will be surrendered to any Standby guests when registration closes.
Walk-up registration will open at 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, for any open/unsold spaces. Standby sales will open at 8:30 pm for any unclaimed wristbands.
ALL SALES are FINAL. NO REFUNDS for NO SHOWS or RAINCHECKS. However, your registration is transferable, so if YOU cannot attend, send a friend or family member in your place. Just have them check-in with YOUR name.
ALL the proceeds from the registration fees benefit the PAFF educational programs and Summer Research Interns
PAFF REGISTRATION: Registration is $30 per person (+ processing fees) and limited to fifty (50) firefly watchers and includes a socially distanced small group guided tour. At 10 pm, registered guests will be divided into smaller groups and guided to the local firefly viewing areas to see the Chinese Lantern fireflies along the Tionesta Creek and Synchronous Fireflies in the secluded forest. This is a one-mile walk* round-trip. This event is not intended for children under 6-years-old.
BLUETOOTH AUDIO DEVICE RENTAL(optional): For an additional fee ($20), a personal Bluetooth audio/listening system is available for rent to the first 40 guests at the festival who wish to listen to the interpretive guide information and enjoy a live musical serenade during the Synchronous show.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU REGISTER :
The PA Firefly Festival is a RAIN-OR-SHINE event. The weather in Kellettville is unpredictable and passing showers happen frequently in June, but fireflies don't mind a little bit of rain. Refunds will only be offered in the unlikely event that a last-minute cancellation by the hosts is necessary due to SEVERE weather at the festival location.
Fireflies are above all creatures of nature. PAFF has been monitoring and keeping data on firefly activity in this area for 9 years. However, firefly emergence and flashing displays are prone to temperatures and weather conditions. There are no guarantees nor assurances that you will see Synchronous fireflies on the night of the scheduled event. However, the interpretive guide program is designed to provide you with information that would allow you to look for fireflies and discover them on your own at a later date.
ALL guests should be prepared for 1.5 to 2 hours of engagement IN THE FOREST. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring rain gear. Sturdy footwear and walking sticks are highly recommended. Flashlights are not required nor necessary, but if used, they must be covered by a dark red filter (available on-site). No cell phones, smoking/vaping or pets will be permitted on the guided tours. Only Service Dogs are permitted on the tours.
*The walk to the creek and the bleachers is easy for typically able-bodied persons. If you have any mobility issues, we will do our best to accommodate your needs or make recommendations for alternatives that will allow you to see the fireflies. Contact us or let us know when you arrive at registration.
PAFF is a registered 501(c)3 whose all-volunteer board's mission is to educate the public and raise awareness about all the firefly species in NW Pennsylvania.
