Sing Portland! was founded in June 2013 by Marion Van Namen. She also founded and led the Portland Waldorf School Community Choir (parents of the Portland Waldorf School) from 2006-2013, and she co-founded and led the Portland Peace Choir from 2009-2013. After completing the Community Choir Leadership Training in Victoria, BC, Canada in 2012, she launched her own choir Sing Portland! in June of 2013.
What's unusual about the choir is that it is set up as a philanthropic business. Singers pay dues, and ALL CONCERT PROCEEDS GO TO CHARITY. Singers not only sing for their own enjoyment. The sharing of the joy of singing reaches far into the world with their benefit concerts. This set up is modeled after the Gettin' Higher Choir in Victoria BC, led by Shivon Robinsong and Denis Donnelly. It's the largest choir in Canada (300 singers) and they raise about $15K per concert - all for charity.
Sing Portland! had their first concert on August 10th at which they raised $3000. Rising Hope Foundation who educates poor children in Uganda was the recipient of the net proceeds.
