2013 BlakTina Performance Series presents FLYING THROUGH THE AIR IN PANTY HOSE - Queer Hip Hop Live
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Hip Hop, BAAD! presents Queer artists and dancers performing their unique form of HIP HOP. Artists include choreographer and dancer Arturo Lyons, Baron Artist (electro/hip-hop recording artist), Sargenta G (Rapper/Poet), J. Skye Cabrera (poet) and Jayboogie (rapper). "Hip Hop grew up from a culture that felt like it had a voice that needed to be heard," adds seasoned music executive Dana Mason. "It was almost a political movement through music to give rise to voices that had something to say about who they were and what topics needed to be addressed. For a long time that same movement established itself as Hip Hop, but recently the older generation of Hip Hop has rejected some of the ideas of the new generation of artists . . . like gay rights and equality in America. Think of it this way, the course language and misogyny that is a part of the DNA of rap music became a real concern once the music left the African American community and became popular music with white kids in the suburbs. Then it became an issue. Now that Hip Hop is everyone, we can have this conversation about equality." - From the following article: http://www.forbes.com/sites/sap/2013/10/02/gay-hip-hop-is-the-culture-ready-to-publicly-embrace-homosexuality/
