Solid Brass - A Fundraising Concert for The Historic Old Church
Show 3:00pm - All Ages - Bar with I.D.
Sliding Scale $5 - $25
Solid Brass, a 12 piece brass ensemble and Portland mainstay for 30 years, performs music from Renaissance to Ragtime. Starring in this fundraising concert is The Historic Old Church 1883 Hook and Hastings Victorian Organ! Included in the program: The William Byrd Suite, selected from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book and arranged for this occasion - a glorious work from 1600, a brilliant rendition of the Navy Hymn, featuring a soaring piccolo trumpet solo, poignant American Spirituals, and just old fashion fun in Tiger Rag made famous by Louis Armstrong. Tom Skyler from Moreland Presbyterian will be featured on the organ.
Several organs built in the 19th century reside in the Northwest, but The Historic Old Church organ is the oldest Northwest tracker-action organ in its original location. Even more important, the organ never was converted to electricity, the popular practice that swept the country during the first half of the 20th century. The decision not to convert the instrument, most likely prompted by lack of funds and interest, saved the very qualities so valued and rare today. The Historic Old Church organ is a fine example of the work of Hook and Hastings, a prominent organ building firm in 19th century North America. It has an authentic Victorian-era pipe organ sound and is valued for its intrinsic musicality and as a splendid vehicle for performing a wide range of music, old and new.
The Historic Old Church was built in 1882 and is now a public events and performance venue located in downtown Portland's cultural West End district. This historic jewel is a remarkable community space, home to music concerts, meetings, lectures, weddings and receptions. The Historic Old Church hosts a free concert every Wednesday at noon.
